Do people know what smart homes are?

We are talking about Smart Homes and trying to give you an insight about this topic. But what do people really think that a Smart Home is?

We have asked this question to 14 people coming from all over the world, with different backgrounds and different age, and the answers were almost the same.

“To my understanding a Smart Home is a home where all the electronic devices are connected to the internet and they can execute some tasks totally automatically and can be stirred by one central device such as a tablet or a smartphone and these two devices should be the central element of a Smart Home”. Christophe, from Germany

“For me a Smart Home is home with a centralized system which can control many devices interconnected” Lorenzo, From Italy

Except for one 24 years old Australian girl who answered:

“Ummm okay: Smart Home for me would be a home somewhere closer to the city, so location is important. I would want there to be good public transport nearby either tram or train. It would have to be fairly inexpensive.”

Maybe not everyone is tech savvy and that is why we are here searching, comparing, gathering information and sharing them.

But let’s move a step forward.

Once we have explained what a Smart Home is, we asked them to tell us what would be their ideal concept of Smart Home.

Again, even if people of our survey were different in many aspects (cultural, economic, social, and geographical), we saw that all the answers led to a common direction: Life assistant.
That’s what Henry from France said:

“I would say something that can assist you on everything in the house like just by saying some key words and they will do it for you”

And Eric, from Florida working for Amazon:

“So, for me, a Smart Home is a home and life assistant. It's technology that helps improve your daily life; whether it is keeping you on time to your next appointment, checking on the weather & traffic, or turning off your lights and thermostat if you're on vacation.”

As you can see words such “help”, “assistant”, “doing things automatically” are the main highlighted concepted that emerged.

But can a Smart Home really be considered as a life assistant? Does it really help you in your daily routine? Is it able to turn things on and off for you from distance, if you have forgotten them?

If the answer to all these questions were yes, wouldn’t you want to turn your home into a Smart Home?
